Stepping Up Her Game

Stepping Up Her Game

Doing whatever it takes to win is something Joey Williams is totally comfortable with. Last week at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, “everyone was roping good,” she says with a laugh. Rather than cave under the weight of the competition, she - along with her horse, Babye - rose to the occasion to finish as reserve breakaway champion.

Williams caught her calf in 1.7 seconds in the finals, splitting the final round win. She finished second to Shelby Boisjoli to take runner-up.

San Antonio was a “fast rodeo,” with a fast setup, she said.. With multiple runs with the same setup, Williams said it was inevitable the times were so fast. Joey’s 1.7 in the final round was 1/10 of a second off Kelsie Domer’s run in the third round, where she stopped the clock at 1.6. Domer’s time was a new record for the San Antonio rodeo.

Lone Star pro teamer Jordan Jo Hollabaugh also made it to the finals.

“When everyone’s good like that, it’s just so exciting,” Williams said.

Williams stayed in Texas after San Antonio - this week she’s at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. If she makes it to the semifinals, she’ll be back in Houston a couple of weeks, then on to Austin for Rodeo Austin at the end of the month.
